What to Expect When Having New Windows Installed
A simple guide to what happens before, during and after your installation.
If you're considering replacement windows in Eastbourne, you may be wondering what actually happens once you've decided to go ahead. From preparing your home for installation to removing your old windows and fitting your new ones, here's what you can expect from our team at Huggett Home Improvements.
1. Installation Day Begins
On the morning of your installation, our team will arrive at the agreed time. We’ll have a quick chat with you before we get started, confirming which windows are being replaced, then we'll get set up and prepare for the working areas.
Preparing your home
Before removing any windows, we'll protect the areas we're working in using dust sheets and runners as required.
You'll generally want to have curtains/blinds removed, and the immediate area around the windows cleared to allow us plenty of room to work.
You don't need to worry about preparing the whole house. We'll let you know beforehand which windows we plan to do on which days, so you have time to prepare.
2. Removing your old windows
We'll carefully remove your existing windows and prepare the openings for the new ones.
This is usually the noisiest part of the process, and there will inevitably be some dust and debris as the old windows are removed.
But don't worry, we'll protect the surrounding areas and tidy up as we go.
3. Fitting your new windows
Once the old window has been removed, we'll prepare the opening and install your new window.
We'll make sure the frame is correctly positioned, level, and fixed securely before completing the installation.
Once the windows, glass and hardware are correctly installed, we'll then apply the finishing trims and sealants to complete the installation.
4. While we're working
One of the questions customers often ask is whether they need to leave the house while we're working.
In most cases, you can carry on with your day at home.
There will obviously be some noise and activity while the work is taking place, but we'll work systematically through the property and keep disruption to a minimum.
If you have children, pets or work from home, let us know before installation and we can discuss a schedule that might make the day easier.
5. The finishing touches
Once the windows are installed, there's still a little work to do.
We'll complete all final checks to ensure that all windows are finished to the highest standard.
We'll tidy up all the workspace and also remove the old windows and installation waste as part of the job.
6. Before we leave
Before we consider the installation complete, we'll carry out a final check with you.
We'll make sure you're happy with the finished windows and show you anything you need to know about using them.
What happens after we leave?
Once your new windows have been installed, checked and you've made your final payment, there are still a couple of important things that happen behind the scenes.
Your installation is registered with FENSA
If your installation falls within FENSA's scope, we'll register the completed work with FENSA after the installation is complete. Qualifying installations are typically registered within 21 days of completion.
You'll then receive your FENSA certificate, providing evidence that the replacement windows comply with the relevant Building Regulations and that the installation has been registered with the local council.
Your 10-year insurance-backed guarantee
Qualifying installations will also have the10-year insurance-backed guarantee arranged for your new windows.
An Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) is separate from the FENSA certificate. It provides additional protection if, during the period covered by the policy, your installer ceases trading and there is an issue that would otherwise have been covered by the installer's guarantee.
Keeping your documents safe
Once everything has been processed, we recommend keeping your:
-
FENSA certificate
-
10-year insurance-backed guarantee documentation
These documents are worth keeping safely for as long as you own the property. A FENSA certificate can also be important when you come to sell your home because it provides evidence of Building Regulations compliance.
What should I do before the installers arrive?
Here's a simple checklist:
The day before:
☐ Remove curtains/blinds where necessary
☐ Move furniture away from the windows
☐ Clear ornaments and belongings from the immediate area
☐ Make sure we can access the rooms we're working in
☐ Let us know about any pets or special requirements
That's really it!
We'll take care of the installation itself.
Still have a question?
As experienced window fitters in Eastbourne, we know that the installation itself is only part of the experience. We also want to make sure you know what to expect before we arrive, how we'll look after your home while we're working, and what happens once your new windows are fitted.
